This week we take on what it means for wives to submit to their husbands and for husbands to submit to Christ in the leading & loving of their families, as sacrificial servant-leaders.

NOTES:

  • This Weeks Whiskey: Old Forester Kentucky Straight Bourbon
  • Biblical male headship / leadership, husbands being the head of their house and wives submitting to their husbands... what does it all mean in our modern world
  • Ephesians 5:22-29 - "22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. 25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.[a] 28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of one body..."
  • Why does "headship" matter? We are designed & created by God, as men and woman, to fulfill specific roles in the family.
  • God making man as the head, does not mean men are superior, better or dominant... it means they have a different role than woman, as the one responsible for the care of and sacrificial love for his wife and family.
  • This verse is specifically saying that a Wife needs to submit to her husband... not women in general, should submit to men in general.
  • To be the helper or support is not a lesser or denigrating position. The definition of "Support" is: "bear all or part of the weight of; hold up." It takes strength to be a good supporter.
  • Men throughout history have not done a good job treating women with respect and honor, so it's understandable to bristle at this idea of headship
  • Scripture is all about submission: God calls us to trust and submit ourselves to Him, children are commanded to submit to their parents and wives are commanded to submit to their husbands...as part of the larger order, we are to submit to the authority of our government and church that God has established... because God has put in place a hierarchy of care and order.
  • Husbands are not in the place of authority to be tyrannical dictators but rather benevolent servant-leaders, who are ultimately responsible for those in under their care..
  • God's model and design is for the servant leaders / head of the family, to serve and give to those under his care... not to take from, oppress and be served by those under him. We are to submit to and be under authority for our good and thriving.
  • God's Kingdom and design are at odds with a culture that rejects Him and calls good, evil and what is evil, they call good. We should not be surprised that God turns the cultural norms upside down and is not in-line with main-stream culture.
  • What sort of response would we get if we ask our wives, "Do I lead you well?"
  • We as men, don't have the choice to not lead... we will either lead well or in our absence, lead poorly
  • Like a good parent, God comes to us and says, this is how I want you to function in life, I've setup parameters and guiding rules and principles to keep you safe and ensure your flourishing.
  • How we view our earthly father, is typically how we will view God.
  • God created institutions like family (husbands, wives and parenting), to help us better understand our relationship with God
  • The call for wives is to respect and follow their husbands, trusting that God has a grip on their husband's and they are dependent on and following God and His calling for his family - The family can trust the husband / dad because they trust God is leading him.
  • Submission makes sense in a Christ-centered relationship that has been redeemed. Without Christ, submission is often selfish and oppressive. Submission to Christ first, is essential and requires the husband to letdown his life first.
