This week Gary Mansfield speaks to Chelsea Lee Winterbottom (@ChelseaLeeWinterbottom) Chelsea Lee Winterbottom is an abstract painter selling in the commercial art world, very often [pre-march 2020] participating in art fairs, interacting face-to-face with the public, a daunting task that can test the confidence of anyone. Chelsea oozes fun and personality, and is confident in her art and practice, all of which is prevalent in this conversation. However, her confidence turns to insecurity when relaying the huge amount of emotion, she applies to her canvas’. Imposter syndrome, seeking our identity or just finding one’s place in the art world is a journey most artists take, although [as in life] some have a less comfortable journey than others… None of which is of any use to someone enduring that discomfort. Chelsea Lee often creates emotional abstract self-portraits, allowing herself the freedom of expression on a physical level when painting with her hands. Although there is much structure to her creations and how they are executed, Chelsea allows herself to play when painting and ignore previous connotations of right and wrong within art. Each work is an emotional abstract self-portrait, however she will not disclose exactly what the emotions are for individual pieces as this could sway the viewers feelings of the art.
