The modern baguette is a versatile ingredient in many dishes. From breakfast croissants to the classic French sandwich, the Croque-monsieur, to bruschetta topping to panzanella salad. The baguette was originally made to be a cheap and quickly produced alternative to other breads in early 20th century France. In WWII it was also used as a form of currency called "pain de marché", because of food shortages. Today, it's a staple and iconic food of French culture enjoyed around the world.
