June is Pride Month, a celebration of the gay community and the advances that have been made over the years.

Those advancements coming, though, with heartbreak interweaved throughout Florida history, where you have a breakthrough like legalizing gay marriage or you have a tragedy like the Pulse attack, so it hasn’t been the smoothest of journeys.

But do we fixate on the past or focus on the future? Honestly, that’s a conversation we’ve had on so many occasions in the newsroom here, and one of the people that’s been integral in many of those conversations is Spectrum News 13 Executive Producer of Special Projects John Handiboe as he shares his struggles of coming out and how the LGBTQ community has diverse opinions from Pulse to the bill banning transgender athletes.
