Edgar Allan Poe életének története éppoly különös és kísérteties, mint saját írásai. Szülei korai elvesztése, szakítás dúsgazdag nevelőapjával, évekig tartó bolyongása a nyomorban, tragikus szerelmei és rejtélyes halála. A nagy francia szimbolista, Charles Baudelaire úgy jellemezte Poe-t, mint akinek a homlokára a " balszerencse" szó van írva. Poe esetében ez valószínűleg enyhe kifejezés...
