This podcast exists to create dialogue among people with various worldviews. Our faith, religion, political stance, etc are things in society that we easily allow to drive us apart. Trust me, Sox and Sandals is all for a good debate every now and then, but there comes a time when we have to put ego aside and allow the individual define who they are, and for subject matter experts to be given the room to speak on the subject at hand. We ascribe to so many labels now days that we think we know who someone is or what they're about before they even put two sentences together. I believe that if we take the time to understand each other's worldview we can achieve meaningful change that will set up the next generation for true long lasting success. Here at Sox & Sandals compassion is key, love is the ultimate ethic, and everything thing we do is for the greater good of society.

It's election season! It's time to vote for the people that tell us what we want to hear! It's time to put our trust in new people because the people we trusted 4 years ago, well... Are you using knowledge or is knowledge using you? Using the Five Levels of Attachment for the backdrop of this series, I discuss how these attachments distort our reality. 1. The Authentic Self 2. Preference 3. Identity 4. Internalization 5. Fanaticism Level 5 - Fanaticism: At this level... "My knowledge controls my every action." Fanaticism: a rigid attachment to knowledge with an obsessive intolerance of opposing views. It is driven by the need to believe in something 100% even though that something’s meaning is dependent on the agreement of others. Anything that contradicts or puts into question the sustainability of the belief is a direct threat, and the fanatic will believe the threat at any cost… Prejudice, intolerance, and violence are the instruments by which the beliefs are imposed onto the dream of the planet. The driving force behind fanaticism is not hate or anger, but rather an extreme form of conditional love for self and others. This is how any beautiful belief in the world can become lost in corruption, as knowledge controls a persons will for the sake of its own existence. Fanaticism is the complete loss of respect for another living being. When we no longer see an individual as a living being, and instead only an idea or a number. The image of oneself can become so distorted that one’s own perception of their own humanity becomes lost. There is no awareness that a line has been crossed, only an illusion remains.…
Are you using knowledge or is knowledge using you? Using the Five Levels of Attachment for the backdrop of this series, I discuss how these attachments distort our reality. 1. The Authentic Self 2. Preference 3. Identity 4. Internalization 5. Fanaticism Level 4 - Internalization: At this stage... "my identity in the form of my knowledge gives me the rules and guidelines by which I live my life." Internalization describes a degree of attachment to knowledge where our identity becomes the model in which we accept ourselves. This is domestication through attachment. At this level our narrators have begun to set the conditions by which we domesticate our identity. They measure our acceptance and rejection of ourselves and others based on the beliefs we use to construct the mask of our identity. We will distort the information we receive to reinforce the conditions of which we expect from life. The narrators also serve our need to validate who we are in our personal dream, as well as the face we present to the world . Our knowledge is corrupted. Our sense of self is the personification of our beliefs and our will is subjugated by the need to fit in with the dream.. Thus our mask may not necessarily be in the form of our passion, but we will wear whatever mask we think we need to be accepted. At this point we’ve lost our sense of respect for self and others, and conditional love is all we know.…
Are you using knowledge or is knowledge using you? Using the Five Levels of Attachment for the backdrop of this series, I discuss how these attachments distort our reality. 1. The Authentic Self 2. Preference 3. Identity 4. Internalization 5. Fanaticism Level 3 - Identity I identify myself with my knowledge although I use it to see and understand the world. When it comes to understanding ourselves our identity is a symbol that can be wrapped up in an expression of our knowledge.. From the stance of knowledge identity is the grounding sense of self that allows us to have our place in the dream of the planet. It gives us the point of reference from which we identify and engage with one another. But this identity is a mask that blurs our awareness of the authentic self… An attachment at this level occurs when we identify ourselves with our knowledge.…

The race problem has plagued America since its inception. Some would say the seeds of extreme prejudice and dehumanization go back just over 2,000 years ago to the Roman Empire. In this course we travel back to 15th century Europe and trace solid roots of modern day racism. Upon completion of this course you be able to clearly identify the continuity and consistency of systematic prejudice that we presently call racism/white supremacy. This course is taught from the lens of a black man who grew up in the whitest city in the United States, attended an HBCU, and came back home with a consciousness that couldn’t help but notice the glaring difference between the two environments. For the past seven years I (that black man) have made it my life’s mission to definitively answer the questions; “What is racism?” “Why does it exist? And “How do we constructively counter this overwhelmingly destructive system? This course, Know Your Enemy: The Evolution of Racism will reveal many truths about white supremacy that have been hidden in plain sight, but hidden nonetheless. This course provides an education on Western (white) culture unlike anything you’ve ever seen or heard. We will tap into the bare naked truth of the systematic oppression, subjugation, exploitation, and extermination of non-white inhabitants of the globe. This 8-week live digital course is designed to help victims of Racism become bold and confident by establishing a rock-solid foundational understanding of Racism/White Supremacy. This course provides a historical framework on the establishment, maintenance, and refinement of Racism and Racist ideology. You will be equipped with tools to constructively live a life of counter-racism. This is for you! The ambitious, open-minded, independent thinker that is dedicated to solving the race problem and/or striving to minimize the feeling of being a victim of racism. You recognize that your genuine concern and ambition to resolve the feeling of helplessness on this subject, doesn’t match the level of historical knowledge and emotional intelligence needed to consistently and constructively live a life of counter-racism. You have been underwhelmed by the advice and leadership of politicians, celebrities, social justice spokespersons, and other hired-guns that tell you what you want to hear, get you all worked up, inspire you in the moment, but leave you with no tools to fight the good fight when they are gone. In the United States so-called education system, most of what we've been taught about our history and our identity has been carefully crafted and curated by our enemy (colonizer/oppressor). Whether we would like to admit it or not, we have been directly and indirectly affected in a harmful manner by this faulty information. The KYE course is designed to equip you with knowledge that will help you to understand what White Supremacy is, how it came to be, how it works, and how it presently shapes your personal identity and our society at large. Once you take inventory of how you've been shaped and molded by this system (of Racism/White Supremacy), you can then take steps to rid yourself of that psychological poison. After you rid yourself of the poison, you have a clean slate to build a correct identity and live a life of counter-racism.…

This a my take on a question Joe Budden posed on Episode 351 of the Joe Budden Podcast. He questioned how racial the George Floyd/Black Lives Matter protests were since he seen police tear-gassing and using excessive force on white people in a similar fashion as they did with black people.
On this episode I listen and react to clips of the Joe Budden Podcast from episodes 349 and 351. The clips pertain to how we rationalize the images and outcomes that we see, versus the rhetoric that is given to us that attempt to explain the narratives surrounding police brutality and racism.

He has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to history and particularly African history. We discuss how the trans-saharan slave trade influenced the transatlantic slave trade. A lot of modern day Africans don’t have extensive knowledge on what happened to their ancestors that were shipped away in the transatlantic slave trade. Very similar to how in America, we were taught that African countries are mostly “3rd world” countries and they mostly live in huts… We discuss the migration story of Hebrew Israelites to “Negroland” and “The Land of Judah,” we touch on the Mandingo people, the Mali Empire, Timbuktu, West African Mythology, the Dogon and their philosophy, the possibility of black American migrating back to Africa and how we might be treated when we come back, and go down many other rabbit holes.…

The Secret of Selling the Negro depicts the lives, activities, and consumer behavior of African American professionals, students, and housewives. A Business Screen reviewer noted that the film focused on the “bright positive” aspects of the “new Negro family.” The film was created in partnership with Ebony and Jet magazine, in cooperation with the United States Department of Commerce. The purpose of the film is to encourage racist white business owners to set aside their racist misconceptions and get to the money. In the 40's and 50's black families fled the Jim Crow south and moved north and west to take advantage of job opportunities that didn't involve sharecropping. Nipsey was a true pillar of his community. He invested in real estate and helped to revitalize businesses, he donated money to help renovate elementary schools, he started a successful STEM program for kids in LA. Nipsey was hyperactive in the neighborhood that he grew up in and used music as a vehicle to finance his dreams. This a truly tragic loss to the hip hop/black community. We’re not obliged to believe the definitions that others give themselves. We have to make our own definitions and rule the world that way. Cheyenne hails from Southside Jamaica Queens, NY and Oba grew up in NJ. As a Portland native I always like to hear the perspective of Portland from brothas and sistas that aren't from Portland. The backstory of how this episode came about stems from a Tariq Nasheed @Tariqelite YouTube video I watched on December 24th that included his commentary on a video Cheyenne made about an interracial dating experience she had in college with a white guy. After watching Tariq's video I went to her YouTube page and seen a video she made about moving to Portland. So I immediately reached out to her about coming on the show. Oba and I have had discussions on the challenges of dating black in Portland, Cheyenne expressed in her video that she is not in favor of interracial dating, so I thought it would be great to have this discussion with the both of them. I've been out the game for nearly a decade, but it's fascinating to hear a fresh perspective of the black experience in my hometown. ***Lyft Driver Promo Code: Emmanuel32636*** Give 135 rides in your first 30 days and earn $1,300 guaranteed! On this episode I am joined by one of the most genuine people I have come across in my lifetime. There is zero exaggeration or hyperbole in that statement either, I truly mean it. Torrey Dooley shares his incredible journey of becoming one of very few black male nurses in the United States. What's even more remarkable is that in his late 20's he made the decision to forsake the path of continuing in the only trade he's ever known, which was being a mechanic. As a husband and a father he made a very tough decision to financially take a setback for a number of years to set himself up to realize his dream, and Torrey was set to make it happen by any means necessary. At the thehoodnurse.com Torrey is on a mission to bridge the gap between the hood and the hospital. There is a lot of mistrust among the black community when it comes to the medical industry, but Torrey helps decode the medical jargon and plainly breaks what we need to know when it comes to taking care of ourselves and not getting lost in translation... Also, around 1:04:00 Torrey tells a story of an interview he did with the late great Portland Hip Hop legend Starchile. This week’s podcast was recorded at the KBOO 90.7FM radio station in Portland, OR with my @obabalu. Oba has his own show on KBOO called Effabl Radio and it airs live every 2nd and 4th Thursday. Oba and I had a high-spirited, extremely passionate discussion that started around colorism in the black community, but quickly veered into the validity of racial classification. First things first, let me double back to colorism topic. Oba hits us with the audacious claim that Erykah Badu and Maya Angelou are light-skinned according to black American colorism standards. I vehemently disagreed, and that exchange was the precursor to the rest of the conversation, because once we got into our race bag we couldn’t have been any further apart on the level of validity we give to the idea of anything constructive coming from racial classification in this world. I am of the mindset that race is a social construct that was created to serve the white supremacist. I believe that there is no biological testing that can prove what race you are, because the way that race is setup in society you can’t be more than one race. You are forced to choose one, even if your DNA says otherwise. Oba believes in the efficacy of the racial classification. He believes race is biological, it can be scientifically proven, and helps to give someone a general understanding of someone based upon their phenotype. Please chime in on the discussion, fact check, and fill in the gaps of our lack of knowledge, to helps us all be better informed…

Has it occured to you that Kanye West is pretty damn smart for a bipolar college dropout? Can we start the narrative there? I know how easy it is to get distracted by the MAGA hat, the TMZ/slavery was a choice rant, and the awkward bro hug he gave to Trump in his most recent visit to the Oval Office, but sometimes you just have to step back and think about the totality of what is taking place. I want to briefly point out a few reasons why I believe a lot of us will be on the wrong side of history as the world dismisses Kanye as some mentally unstable Mega-Celebrity that is certainly always off his meds when we witness his viral moments. I am of the mindset that Kanye is a highly calculated individual and he is the cause of the effect of a majority of the outcomes in his life. His most recent “lunch meeting” with Trump helped open my eyes to see Kanye’s vision. From what I can see, he is on a mission to increase infrastructure for his clothing line by any means necessary. It seems that in Kanye's mind the quickest path to reach that result is through Trump. Kanye’s tactic of choice right now is what I like to call, the Trump Stroke. Ye’ is unapologetically stroking Trump’s ego like no other. Some will attribute the strokeage to him being off his meds, but I would like to point out a few important statements that Kanye made that shows that he’s thinking logically and is not having manic episodes every time we see him in the news. Kanye is becoming more and more intriguing over time and I'm here with my popcorn enjoying the show.…

Salute to Kaep on his positively affecting the country on behalf of "black" people in America. Salute to Nike for being on the right side of history and keeping the same energy through tribulation. We also, discuss some controversial comments shared at Aretha Franklin's funeral by Pastor Jasper Williams Jr. He had some strong words about how to turn "black America" around, and why black lives don't matter. Neely Fuller Jr. said, "If you do not understand White Supremacy (Racism) - what it is, and how it works - everything else that you understand will confuse you. When dealing with law enforcement, as black folks in America, we know there are some suspected racists on the force, and they have little patience when it comes to us. The end goal in any law enforcement interaction should be this, to get home to our family. There's nothing to fight for, nothing that can be proved in the moment. Just take the most constructive course of action that puts you in position to walk away without being harmed and/or detained. In some cases there is no avoiding those outcomes, but we still must obviously do our best to avoid jail and bodily harm.…
In this weeks episode I decided to share knowledge that I have been reading from a book that has changed my life for the better. The United Independent Compensatory Code/System/Concept by Neely Fuller Jr. clearly defines white supremacy(which is synonymous with racism)and how it affects every area of activity (Education, Economics, Entertainment, Labor, Law, Politics, Religion, Sex, War/Counter-War). President Trump used a classic white supremacist way of speaking in reference to immigrants in a recent press conference. The 45 second clip that I use gives context to one of the many scenarios written in Neely Fuller's book, and I compare and contrast the two messages... There has long been a stigma in the black community about seeking professional support for mental health. Over the past few years there has been a slight awakening among the culture, but we still have work to do to overcome some misconceptions. Slavery, Jim Crow, and micro aggressions over a 300-400 year period amount to major trauma that gets passed on in our DNA from generation to generation. In this weeks episode I discuss the recently viral video "I'm not racist" by Joyner Lucas. This video is throwback to the days of MTV/BET/VH1 when a music video was everything in the music industry. The visual is of a white guy with a #MAGA hat on sitting across from a young black man with dreads. They are essentially having a racial rap battle (insert Birdman hand rub)! A lot of folks we're extremely blown away and impressed by the video/song... However, the more I watch it and listen to the lyrics, the more cringeworthy it becomes. This song is the epitome of 'facebook deep.' Just shocking enough to go viral, yet shallow enough for me to swim in (I can't swim y'all)... Join me…
