“I need them to perform on Saturday’s, and I can’t get them to perform on Saturday’s if I break them on Monday.”
“You can’t just throw somebody into a situation without any prior training and then say, “well if you didn’t do it well you’re just not mentally tough.” No that just doesn’t work.”
“Trying to grossly apply mental toughness to specific situations makes for broken athletes.”

This week I get the opportunity to discuss the misconceptions of the role of military training with Jason Crutchfield. After quick run down of how he got into coaching we discuss what his role was in the military and how that has impacted his outlook as a coach, including what training for OCS (Officer Candidate School) is like and some of the mistakes people make when they look at that type of training. He then dives into the ideas of maximum capacity threshold that they experienced in the Marine vs the minimum effective dose he tries to implement with his athletes. He then dives down the “mental toughness” rabbit hole, and where he see’s people being confused with what they do in the military and how it’s in team sports. Make sure to give him a follow on instagram @speed_coach1.
